As the thesis due date looms, I have been reading a lot of other diaries lately. It's not that I am procrastinating, really, I am just taking mental health breaks for my own sanity. No- really. I swear.

Anyway, I have noticed how all the popular and famous diaries are the funny ones. the ones where the diarist takes their daily life and just makes it sound silly. How do they do that? Haven't they ALSO been living through the smuckiest winter known to man, the war, the state of the world, the declining economy, SARS, and so-on? I don't get it.

So I will try to be funny. Although my thesis isn't very funny: Cancer Pain in Native Americans. A regular laugh riot. A thigh slapper. All day I am writing or reading about the horrors of cancer. or, as I like to put it: the cancer pain experience. Sounds like a band. especially when I write it in all lowercase. the c.p.e. . the c.p.e. is even funnier when you add it to the very unfunny experience of being indian on the reservation, yet tethered to the racist public health system for your miserable cancer care. I'm really rolling on the floor now.

I think that I've just been really depressed this year. I am a funny person- I swear!

there i go, swearing again.

Anyway, funny things that happened today:

1) the cat played in her wadded up six foot long sheet of paper so much she just fell asleep in the middle of it. I suppose that isn't funny so much as cute.

2) I ate the same thing for both breakfast and lunch. grape nuts with yogurt and fresh fruit and the best part: pinons. mmmm-good. The secret is to put the pinons last, on top of the yogurt. Isn't that funny? no- confusing funny with yummy. or perhaps funny as in strange, not funny as in haha. (wait- that was kind of funny!)

3) I had to rewrite the discussion section for my thesis. not funny so much as I have to laugh to keep from crying.

4) I just asked sweets if anything funny happened today and he laughed (funny) and then said no. (unfunny)

5) I read the funnies online. I read For Better or For Worse, Get Fuzzy, and Rhymes with Orange. Get Fuzzy was funny, especially the first square.

I should give up on the funny thing. Is there a world out there for completely unfunny, kind of boring and depressed journals? It must be like one of those livejournal communities for cancer and death specialists who work full time and have no lives. A very specific community. Hooo-weee, you should read those journals. dang!

(dang is my favorite word lately. that's kind of funny, which is why I like it.)
